The Indian womens' team has created history by winning their first World Cup at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday defeating South Africa. Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma delivered superb all-round performances as India could win the finals by 52 runs. This was team India's third final in ODI World Cup events and the team secured the coveted trophy in its third attempt, having previously lost the 2005 final to Australia and the 2017 clash to England. In the 2025 final, Shafali scored a brilliant 87 off 78 balls, while Deepti contributed a run-a-ball 58, helping India post 298 for 7 in 50 overs after being invited to bat first. In the chase, the Proteas were bundled out for 246 despite Laura Wolvaardt's fighting century. Deepti starred with a five-wicket haul (5 for 39), while Shafali chipped in with two wickets for 36 runs.

It is noteworthy that team India's journey in this tournament was not easy, they lost three matches in the league stage while playing agaisnt Australia, England and South Africa. By defeating New Zealand, India could secure its semi final place. In the semi finals India had a record victory against Australia chasing a huge total beyond the 300 mark, which have a huge moral boost to the team and also to the fans accross India.
