A massive explosion occurred near Red Fort Metro Station in central Delhi on Monday evening, triggering panic in one of the capital’s most sensitive zones. According to initial reports, the blast took place around 7 PM near Gate No. 1 of the metro station, setting multiple vehicles ablaze in the parking area. Early reports suggest that at least 8 people have died, while over two dozen others have been injured, some of them critically. Several fire tenders and police units rushed to the spot within minutes of the explosion to contain the fire and assist in rescue operations. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, saying they heard a “loud bang” followed by thick smoke billowing from the parking area. The shockwave shattered nearby shop windows and damaged several parked cars.
The Delhi Police Special Cell, National Security Guard (NSG), and National Investigation Agency (NIA) have cordoned off the entire area. Forensic teams are examining debris to determine the nature of the explosive used. A high-security alert has been issued across the national capital, with enhanced checks at metro stations, railway junctions, and crowded markets. Drone surveillance and sniffer dogs are also being deployed in the Red Fort–Chandni Chowk area. Police officials said it is too early to determine whether the explosion was accidental or part of a larger terror plot. “We are not ruling out any possibility. The priority right now is to secure the site and ensure there is no secondary device,” a senior Delhi Police officer said.
A shopkeeper from the nearby Daryaganj area said, “I saw flamesmiAnother local commuter added that metro services were briefly halted as a precaution.
The Union Home Ministry has been briefed about the situation, and Delhi’s Chief Minister has called an emergency review meeting with top police and intelligence officials. Hospitals across central Delhi have been directed to remain on alert and ensure blood supplies for the injured. As of late Monday night, the fire has been completely brought under control. Teams from the NSG and NIA are continuing their forensic sweep. The Delhi Police have urged citizens to avoid spreading unverified information on social media until official updates are issued.
