Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has been suspended from the party after he triggered a major controversy by suggesting the construction of a mosque in Murshidabad modelled on the Babri Masjid. Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim announced the suspension, stating that Kabir had previously been cautioned and advised to rectify his conduct. However, his repeated controversial comments forced the party to take disciplinary action. Reacting to the decision, Kabir said he would launch his own political party on 22 December. “I am in the party because of Mamata Banerjee. If she asks me to leave, I will. I came to know about the suspension from the media. I will resign from the TMC tomorrow,” he said. Kabir further added, “The people of Murshidabad will respond to this. I will fight against both the BJP and the TMC.”

His suspension followed remarks in which he claimed that NH-34 would be under ‘his control’ on 6 December, comments that drew sharp criticism from within the TMC. The party said his statements were unacceptable and did not reflect its ideology. The political drama unfolds just months ahead of next year’s assembly elections, heightening tensions within West Bengal’s political landscape.
