As per a TOI report, six thalassaemia-affected children, aged between 3 and 15 years, tested HIV-positive at a govt hospital in Satna district in Madhya Pradesh, with officials suspecting that contaminated blood transfusion was the source of infection in all the cases, barring one. A state govt-ordered probe has begun.
Sources said about 50% of donors have been identified and screened but the source of infection is yet to be pinpointed. Officials estimate that nearly 350 donors may be linked to transfusions given to the five children suspected to have contracted HIV through blood pumped into their veins. The probe is also examining whether other recipients of blood during the same period may have been exposed.
