Elephants killed as Rajdhani Express hit a herd in Assam

As per news reports, seven elephants, including four calves, were killed on the spot when New Delhi-bound Rajdhani from Sairang (Mizoram) hit a herd around 2 am Saturday in Assam’s Hojai district, no intrusion detection system was installed at the site and as per the local villagers this incident happened due to said dense fog. Reportedly, forest officials said about 60 elephants were sighted at Bherbheri, 1.5km away, and another group of roughly 30 at Natun Gaon. Guards remain on alert, fearing crossings at any moment. Measures are now taken by the NF Railway in this regard, meanwhile, Chakradharpur railway division under SE Railway in Jharkhand announced cancellation of eight trains from Dec 22 to 24 due to frequent elephant movement. Sections between Rourkela–Chakradharpur, Rourkela–Jharsuguda and Rourkela–Nuagaon are affected, with seven MEMU services and one passenger train pulled in both directions.
