Protests At Bangladesh High Commission In Delhi

New Delhi: Major protest has erupted outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, Dy. High Commissioner's office of Bangladesh in Kolkata, in Jammu, in Siliguri and other places in the wake of the brutal killing of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, by an Islamist mob in Bangladesh's Mymensingh last week. The demonstrations are being led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and other groups to denounce alleged atrocities against Hindus and vandalism of their religious places in Bangladesh. Protestors clashed with police and broke barricades as they demanded accountability from Bangladeshi authorities, with some calling for justice and protection of minorities. To contain the situation, cops lathi-charged on protestors. It is learnt that Bangladesh has summoned the Indian envoy over security concerns for their missions in India.

In Delhi, tensions rose when a massive crowd of demonstrators pushed the security barricades. Protestors were chanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", "Yunus Sarkar Hosh me Aao", and "Hindu Hatiya Band Karo". As per reports, protestors managed to break at least two layers of barricades.

Earlier as per latest news reports, keeping humanitarian needs in mind India has reopened its visa centres in Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet, especially of those applying for medical visas, and despite the security threat to its diplomatic facilities. On the other hand, omid growing tensions between Bangladesh and India, Dhaka suspended Monday consular and visa services due to “unavoidable circumstances” at its high commission in Delhi. This even as India reopened its visa centres in Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet, keeping “humanitarian needs in mind”, especially of those applying for medical visas, and despite the security threat to its diplomatic facilities.
The move by Bangladesh came a day after it claimed that protests near its high commission left the “high commissioner and his family feeling threatened”. MEA has slammed Dhaka’s attempts to draw a false equivalence between protests targeting its facilities in Bangladesh and outside the Bangladeshi mission in Delhi. Dhaka’s charge was trashed by the foreign ministry as “misleading propaganda”.
The Indian visa centre in Chittagong remains closed after a mob pelted the Indian assistant high commissioner’s residence with stones on Thursday, with demonstrators coming precariously close to the diplomatic facility despite the presence of Bangladeshi security personnel. The visa services in Khulna and Rajshahi were also closed Thursday in the wake of massive “anti-India” protests.
In Dhaka, a senior Indian visa application centre official said, “Keeping humanitarian needs in mind and despite the evolving security situation, the Indian high commission continues to operate the visa centres at Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet and Rajshahi.”
Though the centre at the Indian high commission in Dhaka was closed Wednesday after protesters had gathered near it, it was opened a day later.
