KOLKATA – Amidst a sea of supporters and a massive display of political strength, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee officially filed her nomination for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency on Wednesday morning. The move sets the stage for one of the most anticipated battles of the 2026 Assembly Elections, as she seeks a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister.
Starting from her residence in Kalighat, Banerjee led a spirited roadshow to the Alipore Survey Building. Accompanied by close confidant and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, she walked the stretch as thousands of party workers lined the streets, waving TMC flags and chanting slogans.
For Banerjee, Bhabanipur is more than just a seat; it is her "home turf." Addressing the media after the filing, she remarked, "Bhabanipur is where my life began politically and personally. I extend my respects to everyone—from the Bengali households to our Punjabi, Gujarati, and Muslim brothers and sisters who make this a 'Mini India'."
The TMC's strategy for Bhabanipur is clear: project the constituency as a symbol of communal harmony. The list of proposers for her nomination was carefully chosen to reflect this diversity, including representatives from various religious and ethnic backgrounds.
However, the path is not without obstacles. The BJP has fielded the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, making this a personal and high-stakes rivalry. Adhikari, once a key lieutenant of Banerjee, has vowed to defeat her in her own backyard, banking on a narrative of "Paribartan" (change) and raising questions about the state's governance.
The day was not without its share of political friction. Banerjee expressed a "heavy heart" over recent developments concerning the electoral rolls. She alleged that nearly 27 lakh names were deleted from the final voter list under the guise of adjudication.
"What is the point of adding names later if the legitimate voters are stripped of their rights now?" she questioned, hinting at a fresh legal challenge in the Supreme Court. The Election Commission, however, maintains that the process has been transparent and followed standard protocols.
With the polling date for Bhabanipur set for April 29, 2026, the constituency is expected to see a flurry of high-profile campaigns. In 2021, Banerjee won the Bhabanipur bypoll with a massive margin of over 58,000 votes, but the 2024 Lok Sabha results showed the BJP leading in five out of eight wards within this segment.
As the "Battle for Bengal" intensifies, Bhabanipur remains the epicenter. Whether Banerjee’s "Mini India" narrative will hold against the BJP’s aggressive outreach remains the biggest question of the season.
