NEW DELHI – In light of the intensifying hostilities across West Asia, India has formally expressed "grave concern" regarding the deteriorating security situation. With the conflict spreading to Lebanon and the persistent volatility in the Gulf region, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated its urgent call for all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and prioritize the safety of civilian populations.

Humanitarian and Strategic Stakes

The Indian government’s stance comes at a critical juncture. On Friday, the MEA emphasized that the protection of civilians must remain the "foremost priority" following reports of significant casualties in Lebanon. India has consistently maintained that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations must be respected, and that international law should serve as the bedrock for regional stability.

 

Beyond the humanitarian crisis, the conflict poses a direct threat to India’s strategic and economic interests:

• Safety of the Diaspora: With nearly one crore (10 million) Indian nationals living and work in the Gulf region, their safety remains New Delhi's top priority.

   

• Energy Security: The disruption of trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, has already triggered volatility in global energy markets. India, a major energy importer, is closely monitoring the impact on LPG and crude oil supply chains.

   

• Maritime Commerce: India has voiced strong opposition to attacks on merchant shipping, advocating for "unimpeded freedom of navigation" to ensure the global flow of commerce remains intact.

   

The Path of Diplomacy

Despite the complexities of the 2026 Iran-Israel-US tensions, India has adhered to its policy of strategic autonomy and "de-hyphenation." By engaging with all major stakeholders—including Israel, Iran, and Palestine—New Delhi seeks to act as a voice of moderation.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the External Affairs Minister have been in continuous dialogue with regional counterparts. India’s message remains consistent: "Dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths forward." While India welcomed the recent temporary two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, officials warn that a lasting peace is essential to prevent a wider regional catastrophe that could undo years of economic progress.

 

As the situation evolves, Indian missions across West Asia remain on high alert, issuing regular advisories to ensure the well-being of the Indian community. The government has signaled that it will continue to monitor the crisis closely, making decisions that align with both global peace and India’s national interest.
