Religious Loudspeaker Controversy Sparks Violence in Asansol, Police Launch Probe

A major clash broke out on Friday in Jahangir Mohalla under the Durgapur Police Commissionerate area of Asansol over the use of loudspeakers at a religious place. According to local sources, the tension began after police allegedly objected to loudspeakers being played beyond the permitted time limit. What started as a verbal argument soon escalated into a violent confrontation between police personnel and a section of local residents.

As the situation intensified, a large crowd gathered in the area and began protesting against the police action. Authorities claimed that stones and bricks were hurled at police personnel during the unrest. Soon after, angry protesters allegedly attacked and vandalised the local police station. Window panes were smashed, police vehicles were damaged, and several government properties were reportedly destroyed during the violence.

Police initially tried to disperse the crowd through announcements and appeals for calm. However, when the mob allegedly refused to back down, police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Several police personnel and local residents were reportedly injured in the clashes. Some of the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Following the incident, heavy police deployment has been made across Jahangir Mohalla and adjoining areas. Additional forces, including RAF personnel, have been stationed to prevent further violence and maintain law and order. Officials stated that the situation is currently under control, though tension still prevails in parts of the locality.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved in the vandalism and attacks. Several individuals are already being questioned in connection with the violence.

The administration has appealed to residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours. Discussions have also been initiated with local religious and community leaders to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
