Modern Infrastructure and Smart Classrooms Coming to Bengal with PM SHRI Schools

After prolonged political tension and Centre–State differences, the much-discussed PM SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme of the Central Government is finally set to be launched in West Bengal. According to administrative sources, the decision aims to modernise and make the state’s education infrastructure more technology-driven.

In the first phase, several government and government-aided schools across the state will be brought under the PM SHRI initiative. These schools are planned to be upgraded with smart classrooms, modern science laboratories, digital libraries, skill development training facilities, and improved sports infrastructure. Along with this, eco-friendly campuses, solar energy usage, and various aspects of the New Education Policy are expected to be implemented in phases.

Political observers note that there had been long-standing differences between the Centre and the State over the implementation of this scheme. Issues related to administrative control and central intervention in education had repeatedly triggered debate. However, recent administrative developments are believed to have helped ease the deadlock.

Education experts believe that if implemented effectively, the scheme could significantly benefit students from both rural and urban areas by providing access to modern learning facilities. In particular, it is expected to strengthen digital education, scientific learning, and vocational training opportunities.

Parents have also welcomed the decision, expressing hope that the quality of government schools will improve, allowing students to study in a better and more advanced environment.

According to the State Education Department, a detailed list of schools to be included in the first phase is likely to be released soon. Many now believe that this move could mark a major transformation in West Bengal’s education system in the coming years.
