The current Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari has once again raised questions over the law-and-order situation and the role of the police in West Bengal. Referring to recent political clashes, arrests of opposition workers, and multiple allegations against the police, he strongly urged the administration to ensure that every complaint related to police excesses is properly accepted and investigated impartially.
Speaking at a political programme, Suvendu alleged that many people have faced harassment over the past few years due to political reasons. According to him, common citizens often encounter obstacles even while trying to file complaints at police stations. Addressing the administration, he stated, “If any citizen comes forward with allegations of police torture or injustice, those complaints must be accepted. No one should be prevented from lodging a complaint.”
The BJP leader further said that in a democratic system, the role of the administration should be to uphold the law in a neutral manner rather than work in favour of any political party. He also stressed that transparency and accountability are essential to restore public trust in the police force.
Suvendu Adhikari’s remarks have triggered fresh political controversy in the state. The BJP has alleged that several false cases have been filed against opposition supporters in recent years. On the other hand, the ruling Trinamool Congress has countered the claims, accusing the opposition of deliberately trying to defame the administration. According to the ruling party, the law is functioning independently and in accordance with legal procedures.
Political observers believe that with several major political movements and programmes expected in the coming weeks, the debate surrounding police conduct and administrative neutrality is likely to intensify further. The issue has already sparked widespread discussion across political circles in West Bengal.
