Message to Beijing? Rajnath Singh in Hanoi for key defence pact with Vietnam, focus on South China Sea security
Amid China’s growing aggression and attempts to expand its dominance in the South China Sea, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Hanoi to further strengthen bilateral and defence ties with Vietnam. The high-level visit has led to crucial discussions on enhancing military cooperation and ensuring overall security in the Indo-Pacific region.
During the visit, the Indian Defence Minister held meetings with Vietnam’s top defence leadership and senior state officials. International observers are viewing the trip as a significant part of New Delhi’s strategic diplomacy in the region.
The talks mainly focused on joint naval exercises, intelligence and information sharing, and boosting maritime security cooperation between the two nations. Discussions were also held regarding India’s possible technological assistance and supply of defence equipment to help modernise Vietnam’s armed forces.
Rajnath Singh stated that India and Vietnam share deep historical ties and emphasized that both countries would work together to ensure free trade routes, freedom of navigation, and adherence to international law in maritime regions amid the evolving global situation.
Although China was not directly mentioned during the discussions, diplomatic circles believe the visit sends a strong strategic message to Beijing, especially at a time when tensions in the Indo-Pacific and the South China Sea continue to rise.
